Last Friday a guy with a giant jack hammer created by Catapiller put
holes in Lake St. one foot apart in each direction for about 250 ft. We
took everything off the plate rail in the dining room, the house shook,
I worried about my house foundation, the cat ran back and forth crazed
by the activity.
Today, bigger machines from Catapiller were moved on site, along with
those big dump trucks, and a cherry picker. House shook from 7am to 3
pm. Neighbors further from Lake St. said their houses shook too. Now I'm
really worried about the 1912 foundation.
Signs went up today saying no parking on the block within about fifty
feet of Lake St. Course that's in front of my house where my handicapped
sign defines my space. The first 4 houses on the block have no garages,
the yards sit 16" above the alley level. I've got guys working furiously
to make some off street parking in my back yard. Thank god the
housemates travel by bike.
The county or city took down the one way street signs and put up dead
end signs instead. The surprise is at my end of the block where turning
around is an increasingly cute maneuver.
Now we've got notices from CenterPoint that they will take this
opportunity to redo the gas lines into our houses, tearing out the
perennial gardens we have sweated to grow. Well, gee thanks. This
certainly makes the cheese more binding.
None of this could have been avoided once the decision was taken to redo
Lake St. But let me tell you, the noise, the entirely awesome equipment
and so much of it is amazing to experience. Once around for this peak
experience should about do it for me.
