This summer in North Mpls is going to be long and hot. The gangs have staked out their turfs and are doing battle. The higher the temperatures go the shorter people's fuses get. We do not need our political leaders adding fuel to the fire.
I for one have not decided who to back in the Fifth Ward race. I want the person who will do the most for my neighborhood. In order to do that, they will have to play well with others. After Nov, North Mpls will have only two council seats dedicated strictly to the Northside. Whomever wins the Fifth Ward seat will have to be able to build bridges with other 11 council members to get our agenda through the process. Therefore, mudslinging and nit picking will not be high on the list of traits I look at when I decide who to vote for. I think both Samuels and Johnson Lee are intelligent and honorable people. I think I know them both well enough to say that they both care equally as much about their community ( knock off the Smothers Brothers routine, folks ). I don't want to hear arguments over semantics. In the Army they used to say that rank among Lts is like viture among prostitutes....non existant. Both candidates are one termers and therefore, equally rank (pun intended). Let's have a campaign based on plans and insights to better our nieghborhood. The residents here deserve it. We see enough fighting and name calling just looking out our windows. If I sound like I'm preaching, chalk it up to age. And by the way, I'm not just suggesting this to the candidates, but to their campaign workers and backers as well. I think recent elections have shown that nothing turns voters off more than pettiness. That's how we got Jesse, remember? Please do us all an immense favor and stick to the pertinent issues. Thank you all for letting me say my two cents worth. Anne McCandless Jordan REMINDERS: 1. Be civil! Please read the NEW RULES at http://www.e-democracy.org/rules.
