She elaborated on how the police don’t help. The gang bangers
are not from Armidillo flats. The bangers know people at the building, but
the residents are not involved. Residents might bring the bangers water or
let them use a toilet, but they don’t live at Armidillo Flats.
I have to say, this is the dumbest response from PPL I have ever
heard--and I've heard a lot of absolutely counterproductive responses
from PPL over time. The bangers are not living at Armadillo, the
residents aren't involved, but the residents bring the drug dealers
water and let them use their personal bathrooms. Hello! Some of the
residents are involved up to their flushing mechanisms.
From living with PPL buildings in my neighborhood and watching activity
in Phillips, I can say that while PPL may be trusted by various
government entities, they are decidedly not trusted by the citizenry of
some neighborhoods because their buildings are not uniformly well run.
One of hundreds of examples: A few years back PPL had an out of control
building on LaSalle north of Franklin a block or two; shootings,
stabbings, loud, continuous partying, the whole megilla. When neighbors
and frightened tenants of the building complained vociferously about the
problem tenants, Joe Selvaggio, creator and long time head of PPL,
lectured the neighbors that they "just didn't want to live next to poor
people." He got the Mpls. police to help him illegally evict the
tenants, drug dealers or not. Now there's some Minnesota Nice with
whipped cream on top!
I resent PPL trying to guilt people ("don't want to live with poor
people" and city councils and CPED with their shtick about housing the
poor) and simultaneously pit some poor people against other poor people,
leaving the drug buckeroos to own the heavily subsidized rental turf. I
resent them being allowed to slide so that their own tenants, those same
poor people, can be terrified by drug dealers.
I'm with Bill Cullen. This state of affairs is intolerable for all
concerned--save the drug dealers, perhaps.
