The Fort Snelling buildings were named as one of the "Ten Most Endangered" sites by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota this year.
Who nominated the buildings is not mentioned, but the press release says that the DNR owns the land and is now free to sell it since the Federal Government has given up rights to it. http://www.fortsnelling.org/UpperBluff.html What action the Preservation Alliance may be able to take other than adding the site to their "endangered" list is unknown. The Minnesota Historical Society does have a museum at Fort Snelling, but probably does not have the financial resources to renovate or maintain the rest of the buildings. The Park Board's opening of athletics fields has brought more people to the site which has raised awareness of the condition of the buildings....but it's proximity to the airport may mean that most people pass by without stopping to take a good look at what's there. Is there any military presence still there? Thought I saw some camoflage trucks and helicopters at the light rail opening last year out at the big parking lot at Fort Snelling. Fort Snelling.org is one organization. "dedicated to the preservation of the natural values of Fort Snelling." http://www.fortsnelling.org. Their most recent newsletter is from 2002, so it's difficult to know how active this organization is and whether or not it has any financial, legal or political resources.
