The rabbits everyone is seeing in the urban neighborhoods is due primarily to them being at the peak of their cycle locally. Rabbits (like most animals) are extremely territorial critters and because their population is high right now, they are showing-up in areas that they don't typically inhabit. Many of last year's young rabbits have been pushed-out into new areas by the adults that bore them last spring.

I have had 2 large rabbits in my yard since i moved in.  they mostly
keep to themselves and while i have a decent garden, they seem to like
the weeds best.  We have had a peaceful co-existence but i will be
watching them this fall and winter.  If they eat my roses like they
did last winter, I will not be waiting for an owl or hawk to correct
them of that mistake.  Sorry.  For their sake, I hope it snows early
and often.
