Well for everyone who has seen me at the library, you understand why at my house we have a rule about not checking out more books than you can carry in one trip. As such I thought I would throw out a few recommendations:
For the policy geeks: The best book I have read recently has been "Government's End" by Jonathan Rauch. It is about how special interest groups have taken over government, especially the federal government. It also gives a lengthy but not optomistic list of remedies.
For progressives: "Blinded by the Right" by David Brock. It goes into detail how the neoconservatives have organized to create their inordinate influence on politics today. Kept me up for three days after reading it. Also gives a blueprint for the kind of organizing it would take to get back the political initiative in America.
For a good read for non-wonkish people: "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis. My best general all around recommendation - part mystery, part science fiction, part romance - it covers pretty much all the basis. An out and out good read.
For people who love Minneapolis and fiction: "War for the Oaks" by Emma Bull. Set in Minneapolis, rock and roll, parties at the Witch's Hat, it is all good.
And yes, I was at Amazon Books at midnight to get my Harry Potter. There were lots of kids there but the vast majority was adults. You know who you are out there.
