Hi. A quick contribution on a few posts from yesterday:
The "person of color" discussion could be never-ending - and still probably interesting, to me. When will we have Hmong or Somali representation on City Council? Is being "of color" as big of a factor as being a homeowner, renter, worker, etc for the upcoming elections.
I'm an Irish-Ukrainian-American renter, and am transit-dependent. Has that demographic represented Ward 10 or the City in the past?
Color and race are absurd and are socially constructed. That said, people believe in color and race - try telling someone being racially profiled/beaten/discriminated against that it's all an absurd, social construct.
I am running for Council here in the 10th Ward - I'm proposing City Charter amendments addressing representation ie. doubling the amount of councilors (cutting pay by 50%) and either doubling the amount of wards or making half of the council seats at-large, with a top-down roster vote of at-large candidates (so, say, the 9th place at-large finisher, who has the support of a large number of Somali-American citizens, gets on the council; or the GLBT candidate, or the Republican candidate - all would be able to campaign on, and represent, either single issue or group-specific topics, thus increasing Democracy and probably even "person of color" representation in Minneapolis).
to another post: I'm all for the ballpark proposal and the smoking ban, and am against grocery-cart fines, beggar-registration, and all ordinances focused mainly on the less-privileged among us.
It would be a service to the voters if all the candidates out there would be specific about their stands on specific issues - try going to the web sites of the different candidates, and see where they stand on the ballpark, specific developments, specific ordinances, etc. It's been fascinating to me, in my short campaign, how other, municipal candidates play things as ultra-safe as the failed campaign's of their party's recent, federal, executive nominees.
