Just for reference on the Bookmobile:

The project originated in the Whittier NRP Plan. We
began implementation in 1992. I was a volunteer at
that time and did not work for NRP. I worked on
implementing this project. The neighborhood
contributed $120,000 of its NRP funds for the purchase
and construction of the vehicle. The Library Board
provided the remaining funds. I don't remember the
exact total but I think the total cost was close to
$400,000. That was in 1992. In 1996 Prospect Park
contributed $19,868 toward books and other materials
for the bookmobile. I have no idea what on-going
operating costs were for this vehicle.

The circulation route for the bookmobile was intended
to reach those populations who did not have easy
access to a library in a building. Senior and public
housing hi-rises, parks, schools and day cares were
the primary circulator routes when the bookmobile
first started rolling on the street. I used to meet
with the library folks every six months or so and we
could evaluate all the stops and ensure they were
utilized and change them if they weren't being used.
There were also stops added on a regular basis because
of interest. The staff that worked on the bookmobile
were incredibly dedicated to its success.

I think the bookmobile is a great library service. I
hope that the library found the bookmobile a valuable
service to its constituents and will work hard to find
the resources to replace it.
