At this point redistricting is a done deal. Well sort of but I won't get into that. What is pertinant here is that NJL and DS are running in competition for the same seat and only one of them will emerge victorious. Rather than getting bogged down in the minutia of redistricting, I would really be interested in hearing what each candidate feels are the most important issues facing their ward and what vision they each have for addressing those issues.

I agree with the many posters of the fifth ward that debates between the two candidates are definately in order and I hope there are neighborhood associations in the fifth ward that are willing to host such debates. I know the Whittier Alliance and the Stevens Square Community Organization are hosting a mayoral debate. I asked the staff person at the WA to ask SSCO if they would co-host a council candidate debate for the sixth ward.

I am thinking that these debates need to emerge in all the wards where there is competition.

One thing I'd like to hear from BOTH candidates is what they think about assessing homeowners in the area for the Lyndale repaving project. Lyndale is a major street - and homeowners in the area already pay property taxes. So why is the City planning on doing this with an assessment?

The streets are used by everyone who lives in the city - especially the major streets - so the business of assessing the homeowners who live adjecent to the street just doesn't make sense. This should come out of property taxes - not assessments. (Property taxes are tax deductable - these street assessments aren't.)

Phyllis was absolutely correct with her bill to hold earlier elections - but the city council members didn't want to have to campaign for their current wards earlier.
