Councilmember Gary Schiff Endorses Jeff Hayden in Ward 8 Lauds Haydens bridge building skills, work with GLBT community
MINNEAPOLIS Minneapolis City Councilmember Gary Schiff endorsed neighborhood activist and former City Council aide Jeff Hayden for the Eighth Ward City Council seat today. Schiff lauded Haydens bridge building skills and work to strengthen the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) citizens in announcing his endorsement.
Jeff Hayden has the ability to bridge the diversity of the Eighth Ward and move the community forward, said Schiff, who serves the Ninth Ward. Whatever the issue or constituency, Jeff can relate to peoples concerns and effectively represent all voices.
Schiff also touted Haydens work to protect the rights of GLBT people. Hayden served as a policy aide to Schiff for two years, during which time Hayden helped write the ordinance to require that companies doing business with the city extend domestic partnership benefits to company employees. Hayden also received an acceptable rating from Stonewall DFL, the GLBT caucus of the Minnesota DFL party.
Jeff has the compassion and understanding to build a safer and more welcoming environment, and the GLBT community could not ask for a stronger ally, said Schiff, who is openly gay.
Schiffs announcement is the third high-profile endorsement Hayden has received in the last three weeks; former Minneapolis Mayors Don Fraser and Sharon Sayles Belton endorsed Hayden in July.
Hayden currently works as a Housing Coordinator for Mental Health Resources, and is the Vice-Chair of the Bryant Neighborhood Association. He previously served as president of the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association for three years.
