List,

I'm sure many folks had a great night out last night celebrating National Night Out. As a candidate for the Park Board, and long- time supporter of NNO, my husband and I biked to 11 different neighborhood gatherings last night. It was hot, people were fanning themselves, kids were splashing in wading pools dragged out into the middle of the street, there was music and food and dancing (!), and conversations were animated. I was amazed at the differences in and between our neighborhoods and spirited by the commonalities that draw us together.

The Fourth Park District, which I am seeking to represent, is a diverse district. It encompasses much of the Chain of Lakes (Calhoun, Isles, Cedar, Brownie), Bryn Mawr, a slice of the North Side, the Sculpture Garden, Loring Park, Elliot Park, Stevens Square, Washburn Fair Oaks, most of Downtown, and a bit of the downtown Riverfront. In each neighborhood I saw singles, families, elders, kids, business owners, residents, Mpls police, candidates, dogs, bikes, antique cars (and just old cars), observers, and active participants (the most active were those manning the grills and those handing out popsicles....). People were really enjoying themselves and I'm thrilled our city has such civic pride as to come out in the ninety-plus degree heat and just hang out together.

It's one of the things that makes living in Minneapolis so great.

I hope you all had fun out there and can share something that really surprised you about your neighbors or city. What were people talking about?
