Barb L scribed, in part, and in good humour:

I talked to Jesse a couple of weeks ago Gary. He is busy considering whether
he will attempt to become the benevolent dictator of Baja California
<snip<<<<<

I reply (with some humour?) as well.....

American "Libertarians" are like American "Conservatives." Neither tends to
know anything about liberty or conservation, but both tend to be more about
our shared false sense of entitlement and egocentrism.

Local politics follows the script!

Political leaders always believe that they are benevolent. We all
want to believe that we are the underdogs and the good guys and we will
"terminate" the evil-doers if only we elect the right strongman to lead the
crusade.

Yes, it would be a funny Hollywood movie: Jesse Ventura sitting out by the
seashore in Minneapolis on the Baja, smoking
fine cigars and dispensing his own brand of libertarian wisdom to an adoring group of transplanted Minneapolis libertarians. Sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, red meat, and plenty of firearms! We would build a smoke-filled pro-wrestling stadium called "SmokeDome" or "DeathDome" complete with skull-and-crossbones.... In a movie, that is.

(BTW, Mick Jagger will not be a bit surprised about smoking bans. Bono forgot and lit up in a fancy hotel he owns, and was quite glad to comply when reminded of the smoking ban. Europe is way ahead on this one.)

But smoking is *not* the issue --although politicians would love us to tie ourselves in knots about it. (Distraction, you know.)

The issue is that we are burning through our environment, destroying any remote chance of a decent future. The toxins from one day's petroleum use are far more damaging than all the tobacco smoke we churn out in a month's time, I would guess.

We are encouraged to buy more and bigger SUVs at reduced prices while our politicians kiss the unmentionable-in-polite-company-anatomy of people who want to be told that our sacred affluent "Way of Life" will continue forever: "Free lunch and cheap grace for me, apocalypse for thee!"

Don Johnson ( http://donjohnsonmayor.org/ ) has some great ideas to plan for the real future. Farheen Hakeem, the Greens, and others are worth hearing as well.

We'll get the Mayor we deserve. "Send in the clowns......don't bother.......they're here..."

There are no political solutions. We need to change the wind. Miracles, anyone?
