Liz Wielinski, Chris Johnson and sometimes a couple of others have been taking Park Board minutes for over 18 months now and not getting paid a red cent for hours and hours of going to meetings and then transcribing the minutes - many which have been posted on the Mpls Issues list for all to see. I think most of them are archived on the Park Watch website. I think it is awesome that they do it having been a Board secretary for years on various Boards. It is a cumbersome but needed task. It is really embarrassing that we even have to have these conversations about MPRB staff taking minutes If no one wants to sit for hours transcribing minutes aren't there computers that are voice activated. If not someone needs to invent one especially (and just for) the Mpls Park Board. Pardon my cynicism on this one - it is unbelievable that we are spending time on this rather than a meaningful park discussion.
A meaningful Park discussion - what is that?

I agree - it's a great stand, Jason.

Just a thought though - why doesn't somebody just start taking minutes for the park board? I mean, somebody else (Liz Wielinski) already does pretty much that. I'd be willing to go to a couple park board meetings and take minutes for them (but I can't make it to all of them). They could be posted on a website (maybe one of the reform the board websites). Then, in a pseudo-bitchy protest during open mic every week, we can recap what happened at the last meeting and submit our minutes to the commissioners.

Maybe after a meeting or two, they'd figure out that it really isn't that difficult to do. And, if they don't get it then, maybe they'll figure it out come November.

Good for you Jason! It seems very strange indeed that the
Superintendent claims the cost of having someone keep minutes would be
prohibitive when every meeeting of the Board is also attended by Park
Board brass with a collective annual payroll in the several hundreds of
thousands of dollars and. many times, hired consultants who charge by
the hour. I'm not disputing that they need to be there - but would the
cost of an administrative assistant to keep basic minutes (who
presumably could take a few hours of comp time the next day so no net
cost) really break the bank? Or if it's really that expensive, maybe
one of the 4 or 5 staffers who are already there could do it.
