A slight correction to Mr. McGrath's post. Dave Shegstad was endorsed by the Minneapolis Republican Committee rather than the Fifth Congressional District Republican Committee. Municipal endorsements are not within the purview of the congressional committee, although Mr. Shegstad has attended our district full committee meeting and gave a well informed platform speech in regard to issues facing the City of Minneapolis and more specifically the 9th ward.
I was a little surprised that Ms. Higgins waded into a contest that is far removed from her own state senate district. Usual rule of thumb is for the city party chair or the relative geographical office holders up the food chain to weigh in if they perceive an implosion of the incumbents re-election efforts. I do not fault any candidate for making the rounds of the respective parties. I have been sticking my nose into the other camp(s) for years as a political operative. During these forays I have had a good time, met interesting people, learned the other side of the issue(s) and have yet to find a person I dislike. In opposition to Ms. Higgins position that making the rounds is a lack of focus, I put forth that meeting people and learning their views is a sign of initiative on the part of the candidate. I will mirror Mr. Lilligren's comments in regard to respect for those who stand in the public spotlight to seek political office. A race for office is not easy and at times not pleasant, although their fellow citizens should commend the candidate(s) initiative in stepping up to make a difference. In my view politics should be about policy and not personality. Although Mr. Schiff is viewed is some circles as a shoe in for re-election, others including Ms. Higgins appear to be not so confident. From a political perspective the 9th ward race gets down to brass tacks with specifics rolled into a generalization. Mr. Schiff stands on his record stating, if you like how things are going, vote for me. Mr. Shegstad counters with, if you dislike how things are going, vote for me. Regardless of the outcome of the race, I look forward to a spirited campaign from both sides of the aisle. Lee R.
