One thing that Ian does not mention...he is also running for library board
and will bring a library insider's expertise to the board. He has been
very open and knowledgeable at the forums.
I second what he has to say about Samatha Smart...she is one bright
woman and will bring a voice for those who have none. She is not
behelden to any party so will work for those who vote her in...the
people.... That might scare the heck out of some party loyalists:=}!
She also has come up with ideas to generate more revenue to the
system...some say not legal...other say not doable...good or bad,
the fact is...she is bringing out thought provoking ideas other than
LGA or nothing at all in some cases. This candidate is articulate,
bright, educated, great debater, and loves the libraries.
A cookie cutter she is not and that is one great plus for us.
Dorie Rae Gallagher/Nokomis
Hello,
I am new to this list. I just wanted to chime on in the difference
between our times and Gratia Countyman's. First I want to say Ms.
Countryman was a great director in her time and she lead the library
through many changes over many years. The new Central Library should
be named after her.
One thing that comes to mind when I think about the difference between
Ms. Countryman's library and Kit Hadley's library today in the
skyrocketing cost of health care for employees. In the August 8-14
Skyway News, Farheen Hakeem notes the city is getting hit with a 21%
health insurance hike.
If you look at the projected budget for the library in 2006,
$1,553,462 is lined up to pay for employee health care. This is about
7.5% of total expenditures. The library is projecting a 19% annual
increase in health care costs while the collections budget has a zero
increase and salaries are at 2%. These kind of increases are not
sustainable in the long run
I also would like to say Samantha Smart would be an excellent addition
to the library board. We need new voices on the board. Samantha
comes from a strong community activist background. She helped raise
money to allow Nokomis Library to be open another day. She is the
kind of entrepreneural trustee we need in these austere times. It is
time we look past the DFL political machine for qualified candidates.
We need a diverse set of voices on the board and Samantha would be
great bridge between the community organizations and the Library
Board. Please attend the upcoming library candidate forums next week
at Hosmer library from 6:30-8pm on Tuesday and Walker library from
2-3:30pm on Saturday.
