The new generation of wind powered generators (windmills) can produce electricity cheaper than coal, oil or nuclear powered generators. This happened about a year ago. Most of the larger machines are made in Denmark. Some 20,000 watt machines are made right here in Minnesota. The Denmark machines are low RPM and do not threaten the bird population. Nuclear power plants were heavily subsidized. With the problems of storing nuclear waste safely and with the new threats of terrorism, nuclear power will prove to b the most expensive way to produce electricity. Some cheerleaders for nuclear power are claiming that they are a solution to global warming. Baloney! Nuclear reactors are the hottest spots on the earth... as hot as the suface of the sun. Those giant cooling towers are not there for decoration. They cool the super heated water and disperse it into the atmosphere directly. There is no such thing as a closed system nuclear power plant. Every nuclear power plant around the world leaks deadly ionizing radiation into our air, water and earth. Ionizing radiation causes cancer, leukemia and birth defects. Cancer is now the leading cause of death in Minnesota and Minneapolis. Minneapolis spends about 18 million dollars a year for all of its government buildings, street lighting, parks and schools. There are federal funds available for purchase and installation of windmills. Its a no brainer. Put one or two on the freeway to test them out. Construction of renewable energy technology will create jobs (the holy grail?) but most important they will generate electricity without producing mercury and greenhouse gasses. Minnesota does not produce any oil, coal, gas or nuclear fuel so it will mean billions of dollars will not flow out of our city and state year after year. Always question the people who criticize renewable energy. They are usually working for the coal, oil or nuclear industries. These are just a few of the tactics we can use to reduce taxes and dangerous pollution including greenhouse gasses. Many more tactics on my web site. _www.donJohnsonMayor.org_ (http://www.donJohnsonMayor.org) Sincerely, Don Johnson, Candidate for Mayor, 3808 Grand Ave So.
