http://www.energybulletin.net/news.php Whether you are interested in AirAmerica's take on the latest energy bill, William F. Buckley's recommendation that we go to a voucher-based gas rationing system, or many other technical or popular articles about peak oil, we share a common interest as citizens to prepare Minneapolis for the new energy paradigm. Folks, the ecological tsunami is going to dwarf all other concerns in the coming years. Current analysis shows that our models of global climate change have been far too conservative, while at the same time we have depleted fossil fuel sources--especially petroleum -- to the point that finding, developing and processing the heavy sour crude and tar sands will be very costly and energy intensive. We will get far less energy/economic from petroleum as it becomes more expensive to develop, extract, and refine. Many energy industry experts -- Matt Simmons, Jan Lundberg, Colin Campbell, and others -- have been sending the message for years. There are no easy techno-fixes. we need to develop alternative, clean energy sources now as well as conserve energy. We need to bring back walking and biking and efficient mass transportation as our primary means of getting around. We need to shift from roads to rails. We need to relocalize as much farming and manufacturing as we can. Our local political and corporatist leaders don't talk about this because they cannot comprehend it and often simply refuse to believe it. Our Enronesque political and corporatist leaders "party on" oblivious to facts and encourage us to buy larger, more gas-guzzling vehicles, and to drive them even more. they encourage "investment" in huge energy-sucking infrastructure projects like new sports stadiums while we need to truly invest in creating a new, sustainable urban infrastructure. Our current urban infrastructure is violent in many ways and at many levels. We demand war to run our city the way we do, and even the current war is not enough. We need to create an urban infrastructure of peace: harvesting the energy of the sun for food and electricity and so reconnecting with earth through tending an urban edible landscape. -- pedaling for peace and ecojustice from Lynnhurst -- -- Gary Hoover REMINDERS: 1.
