And we don't want to help the cute little child. We would rather
incarcerate the prostitute or heroin addict.
Is this a deliberate skewering of what I said? I have to wonder. I'm
talking about a finite group of people who are making misery for us all.
I said nothing about not helping children so that they don't wind up in
the mess I'm describing. The idea is to deal with adult offenders in a
way that could give them their lives back. To pretend that this is
somehow cruel and unusual punishment is to ignore the issue, throwing
all sorts of fol-de-rol in the way--the poor mentally ill, the poor
children, the overcrowded prisons.
I know for a fact that the jerkwaters who are all over the corner of
27th and Bloomington do not fall into those categories. Nor do the jerks
at Park and Lake, Chicago-Lake, or the ones who are presently bedeviling
the northside. This is a notion to deal with adult repeat offenders who
are caught with crack, heroine, meth, and whatever and are charged,
convicted, and then returned to the streets after a visit to a
short-term treatment facility--over and over and over. That's not a good
use of public resources.
A strawberry prostitute is one who sells herself/himself strictly for
drugs--no money changes hands.
In my estimation, the commentary on this notion demonstrates the failure
to look honestly at an issue and think about it rather than producing a
knee-jerk, pat answer.
