Actually, lasting change usually happens in a very subtle manner, caused by
external (usually economic) influences.
Cases in-point -
automoblies. I don't think ost people thought of them as anything other
than a novelty, until they were in such wide use that their existence could
no longer be called a novelty.
Gas lights, compuetrs, electricity, airplanes.
Historically people haven't been willing to "do the right thing" if it costs
them more. They will change however, when doing the right thing becomes
either easier, or more cost-effective.
