Last night my fiancé and I went to a friend’s going-way-engagement party held
at the Local Bar-Restaurant downtown and we also stopped at Rossi’s, both
establishments still used standard lighting instead of compact florescent or
other efficient lighting productions.

I work on energy policy at the state level and improving efficiency is an
important part of our work. By reducing our current energy usage we can save
energy for other consumers and thus not have to build another coal or nuclear
plant. It is very frustrating for me to walk into restaurants, bars, hotels,
stores, and offices buildings that do not use energy efficient lightings. It is
the most basic step that can be taken by businesses that will help the
environment and save the company and thus their customer money.

The average Minnesota household use about 760 kilowatts of electricity
per-month. In my own home we have replaced most of used light bulbs with
compact florescent, and we use about 300 kilowatts of electricity a month. My
household can still take more steps to reduce our consumption but just changing
our light bulbs from standard to compact florescent made a huge impact.

According to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency if all American
households just changed their five most used lighting fixtures from standard
lighting to efficient compact florescent that use one-third as much energy as
standard light bulbs, our nation could close 21 coal-fired plants, enough for
our nation to meet our obligation to Kyoto treaty.

City Inspectors should give warnings pamphlets with information on what steps
and resources for business to reduce their consumption and the financial and
environmental-health benefits of making such changes. If they return to a
business and they have not at a minimum changed their light bulbs they should
be fined. If we just changed our light bulbs we could reduce our energy usage
significantly, and if we don’t make such changes our children and grandchildren
will not have a very pleasant world to live in. The city should urge businesss
to make such changes.
