Barb Lickness: Then we found out that we didn't have the authority to clean off graffiti on those things and could actually be arrested and prosecuted for defacing public property by attempting to remove the graffiti from public signs and boxes.
Ed Kohler: Does anyone know if this has actually happened? While it may be technically possible, it seems highly unlikely that a cop would arrest someone for painting over graffiti on public property. It also seems like the current abatement system falls way short of logging all of the tags from some of the city's most notorious taggers. For example, there are people who tag dozens to hundreds of signs, utility boxes, bus benches, etc., using paint markers, but the tags are removed by active residents but not logged. It seems like a camera phone/email system that allowed residents to send in photos of tags they're removing (with location/time/etc.) would help build significantly larger cases against this type of vandal once they're finally caught. -Ed Kohler REMINDERS: 1.
