Thank you to Steve Brandt for clarifying that I personally have been very supportive of the development of the Midtown Greenway and its activities (along with other greenways, bikepaths, finger parks and other types of greenspace and transit options). And I still will never forget George Puzak's slide show with his first dreams of the connections a Greenway could make between the lakes and the river. And yes, it is true that I am one of the 20+ sculpted "community leader" faces underneath the bridge on the wall at 5th and the Greenway.

However, there is often a misperception that the Park Board does mowing and maintaining of the Greenway which is the part I was referring to . And it was like pulling teeth to get some funds to continue participating in the Midtown Greenway Coalition and at one point it was even suggested to pull some of that small funding in order to support the Teen Teamworks summer youth program... the grasping at straws notion. That didn't happen.

I, like others, am concerned about naming the bridge over Hiawatha (sounds like Bridge over Troubled Waters) for Martin Sabo. Part of that goes with agreeing about dead or alive namings but the other part is that Martin has done so much for so many that some day it will be extremely difficult to figure out what to name after him. Like the Wellstone's - he will probably get several thing named after him...
only in the future will we know this.

The Park Board has very little to do with the Midtown Greenway and the endeavors

project plus lots of other players except the Park Board.

Brandt: See third item below from Commissioner Young's bio page on the Park Board web site.

New Developments or Initiatives (Year in Review):

*Committed to safe parks, strong neighborhoods and citizen participation.
*Keep on task measures to protect water quality in our lakes and the environmental restoration of wetlands and prairie still. *Pursuit of the possibility of a Park Crossing/ land bridge structure at 28th and Hiawatha, the connection of the lakes and the river by the Midtown Greenway and river and park development along the Upper North Mississippi.

Comment from Brandt: Moreover, the Greenway was originally promoted by a group in which then-Park Commissioner George Puzak was prominent. The Park Board was one of five government partners in Hennepin Community Works, organized in 1994, for which the Midtown Greenway was a signature project. And I believe that Commissioner Young is one of the community members whose faces are sculpted onto the 4th Avenue bridge pier adjacent to the Phase 1 of the Greenway.
