Hal Johnson Writes:
Regarding siding: It's true that vinyl and aluminum siding cost less than
alternatives such as stucco, fiber-cement boards, or weather-resistant wood
siding. I could find a few people who think vinyl and aluminum are "real
dumb," and that plywood is nice and affordable. But I'm glad the city
council wants to avoid materials that in 30 years will be cracked and faded
and dingy. Building a durable and attractive city is the best way to sustain
the community and the natural environment in the long run.
Dennis Plante Responds:
Then the few people you found would be bucking thr conventional wisdom of
the national builders that build new homes in the twin cities. Pretty-much
every priced less than $300k is going to be at least partially sidied in
vinyl. Vinyl still enjoys (even in our harsh climate) the majority market
share as a siding product. Most of it is due to affordability. Is it a
wise choice to do so? Probably not. But in today's economy most people can
ill-afford spending $4-6K more and having to face repainting every 8-10
years.
As a matter of fact, three of the jobs I start next week are as follows:
$700k home in Eden Prairie - fiber-cement front/vinyl on the other 3 sides
(cost $23,670)
$300k home in St Paul (historic restoration) - fiber-cement (cost $31,316)
$290k home in S Mpls - replace 20 year-old WOOD siding w/vinyl (cost
$14,570)
