ACORN Endorses Jeff Hayden in Ward Eight
Social justice organization likes Hayden’s work to empower the poor

MINNEAPOLIS – The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) endorsed former City Council aide and community activist Jeff Hayden for the Eighth Ward City Council seat today. The social justice organization works to empower low- and moderate-income families to create stronger communities.

“I’m honored to have the support of a progressive organization like ACORN because I want to improve the lives of those who struggle just to get by,” said Hayden. “The City of Minneapolis has a huge role to play in lifting up the masses to ensure good paying jobs, strong schools, and safe streets.”

Hayden has worked to empower disadvantaged communities both through his current job with Mental Health Resources and a previous position with Hennepin County. In his current position, Hayden secures affordable housing for the poor and mentally ill and mediates on their behalf when disputes arise with landlords.

ACORN’s announcement makes it the second liberal group to endorse Hayden; Sierra Club endorsed him in March. In addition, Hayden has received the endorsement of Minnesota State Rep. Keith Ellison, Minneapolis City Councilmembers Dan Niziolek and Gary Schiff, and former Minneapolis Mayors Don Fraser and Sharon Sayles Belton.

Hayden lives with his wife Terri and their two young children in the Bryant neighborhood. Previously, Hayden served for two years as an aide to Schiff, and led the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association for two years.

Since 1970, ACORN has grown to more than 175,000 member families, organized in 850 neighborhood chapters in 75 cities across the United States. ACORN's accomplishments include successful campaigns for better housing, schools, neighborhood safety, health care, and job conditions.
