Since Mr. Dobson has repeated the statement (indeed in CAPS), I'll take the
opportunity to vent a small pet peeve.

If memory serves me, the tobacco settlement was not $6 billion, it was $2.9
billion. The total payout was $6 billion, but over a substantial period of
time. The present value of the settlement was $2.9 billion, which is the
correct way to state it, unless you're trying to make people think your
recovery was more super duper than it was. If twice as long had been
negotiated for payout, it could have been a $15 or $20 billion payout. Now
that truly would have been an impressive result!

I'm not disputing Mr. Dobson's characterization of Mr. Ciresi; I don't know Mr.
Ciresi and have no reason to doubt his general integrity and honesty. But one
also might recall that when the substantial Miller, Ciresi legal fees (payable
on invoice) became a subject of some public discussion, the "$6 billion"
settlement was cited to justify them.

Excuse my language, "But what crap".

For those who do not know, after the Wellstone plane crash, the Wellstone
family and 3 staff members families were all represented by Mike Ciresi of
Robins, Kaplan, Miller and Ciresi.

I have known Mike for over 15 years and he is not only the best trial attorney
I know of, bar none, but one of the most honest lawyers there is. Mike was
instrumental in first breaking open the Dalkon Shield case against A.H. Robins
in the 1980's. When Union Carbide killed over 5,000 people Bhopal India in the
1990's the Indian Government hired Ciresi to represent them.

Finally, Mike conceived of the State of Minnesota litigation against the
Tobaccoc industry that eventually netted the State of Minnesota $6 BILLION
DOLLARS.
