Keith says:

I have read over and over Margerat's optimism toward McLaughlin. I think it
is misplaced. He has expressed a disturbing nostalgia for the period from Mayor
Don Frasier thru Mayor SSB. This was the era of municipally created
homelessness in Mpls. I was personal witness to the disregard, contempt,
malice, and
demolition of housing in the core neighborhoods both North and South in this
era. I lived in the core, loved in the core, worked in the core, and was even a
repeat crime victim in the core in this era; both North and South.

I feel qualified to report that I watched terrific, and not so terrific
housing get condemned, boarded up and demolished over and over and over in the
hoods. Often an unpaid water bill, and hence termination of an essential
utility
was the first incremental step down Demolition Lane. And Demolition Lane was
right next to Homeless Avenue. They ran parallel through all the core
neighborhoods.

We do have tons of housing starts now. More than I ever dreamed of even as
late as 1998, when you could, and I did, buy a vacant lot at the County auction
for $500 bucks. Now they start at $35,000. Nevertheless: The Bones are Still
Buried in those Hundreds of Vacant Lots; now built upon.

McLaughlin nostalgizes the era that defined Mass Homelessness Mpls. Style.
The era when McLaughlin and the other County Commissioners had to scramble to
create shelter for hyper mobile families. So quickly the outright evil is
sugarcoated in nostalgic goo. And I, unlike McLaughlin, will NEVER nostalgize
that
awful epoch of the DFL Demolition Juggernaut.

Never. And "Never Again"

I believe Peter McLaughling provides the best hope for this city.
