'No' vote on Fort

I appreciated the article on the proposed "Fort" development at Ft. Snelling
(Aug. 15-28). I voted against this project. Though the project seemed to fill a
recreational need, I was concerned that the developer appeared to be a shell
company, without assets to provide security.

Further, the contract's length was too great for the uncertain nature of the
project and renewable at the option of the developer.

My concerns have, unfortunately, been substantiated. I am disappointed that
"The Fort" has been such a problem.

Marie Hauser, Park Commissioner, District 3, City Council candidate, 8th Ward

********************************

I find this so strange because at about the same time Commissioner Hauser's
campaign for City council ward 8 was handing out a piece of literature which
seemed to imply that Marie Hauser supported Mary Merrill Anderson's bid for an
at-large Park Board Commissioner seat.

Why would this be strange?

Well, the contract that Marie is so upset about in her letter was finalized by
then Superintendent Mary Merrill Anderson who refused to allow the previous
Superintendent, David Fisher, to complete the negotiations which would have
been far more favorable for the Park Board and would have shielded them from
the failed skateboard park lawsuits that the Board now faces.

Mary Merrill Anderson was also the Superintendent when the Park Board for the
first time in its history discovered that it could not manage the concession
stands at the parks and posted a loss of $125,000 according to their own press
releases for 2001, thus opening the door for bringing in outside contractors to
operate food concessions and giving up cortrol of job opportunities for our
youth to private contractors.

So I find it strange that Marie Hauser would support the architect of the
disaster she was at the same time apologizing for.
