I just wanted to keep the list updated about our endorsements for city council
.
The newspaper with endorsements for wards 8 and 10 was distributed
throughout Minneapolis, yesterday and today. A Spanish version of this
editorial has been sent to our e-mail list, and there is a link to our
Spanish version on http://www.gentedeminnesota.com/editorial_dot.pup?nod=9
Unfortunately we've had a very busy week an our staff hasn't had time to
translate the editorial. We'll hopefully have the English version online
early next week. Steve Clift once told me that it would be fun posting
editorials
in Spanish in this list, and I know some of you are fluent Spanish Speakers.

I translated the paragraph in the editorial that was related to the eighth
ward endorsement. We endorsed Jeff Hayden for the primary so decided to endorse
again
for the general. The rest of the editorial reiterated our primary endorsement
of Scott Persons in ward 10, and mentioned that Marie Hauser was not able to
answer
our questions for the primary but did so for the general, and talks about
specifics on locations of the wards and how to vote. The following is a
quote of our editorial:

"In the eighth ward, our decision was not easy. Both Marie Hauser and
Elizabeth Glidden showed major strengths that would help our community. We
agreed with all their answers to our questions. Having to choose one
candidate though we chose Elizabeth Glidden, who impressed us with the
amount of detail and effort she put into answering our questions. Elizabeth
also brings a refreshing perspective away from public office, and has shown
extensive work in the past as a civil rights activist and knows well the
needs of immigrant communities, thanks to her work in the Somali community.
She will bring a new needed perspective and add to the diversity of the city
council with her strong civil rights and immigrant legal background."

We will hopefully be making endorsements for Wards 2, 6 and 9 next week, and
for
Mayors of Minneapolis and St Paul the following week. The Ward 2,6 and 9
questionnaires
went out on September 30th and they're due next Monday, for endorsements and
publishing
next Thursday.

We have only heard back from one candidate in ward 2 so far, and none from 6
and 9.
I used e-mails from e-democracy and I'm worried not all the candidates have
gotten
our message yet. If anyone in this list can help us lobby candidates on
responding we'll
appreciate it very much. We had a great response from Ward 8 and 10 candidates.

Its very important for us to keep Latino Voters informed about the election and
candidates
informed on issues important to the Latino community. Please help us with our
efforts.

Thanks in advance from our understaffed editorial department.
