I urge people to attend the Speak Out to Improve Police Community Relations.
Where: Mpls City Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, City Hall, 350 South 5th Street
(City Council Public Safety & Regulatory Services Committee meeting)
When: Wednesday, October 12, 1:30 p.m.

I had the good fortune to meet Lt. Arradondo about a year and a half ago. He
came to a meeting with those of us working to decriminalize homelessness. At
that meeting was a person from the City's Civil Rights Department, 3 other
police officers besides Lt. Arradondo and person from the City Attorney's
office
among others.

What struck me about the Lt. was his obvious concern about the manner in
which people experiencing homelessness in this city were being treated. He,
like
many rank and file police officers I have had the chance to speak with, noted
that they want solutions and collaboration to help, not hurt people living
homeless.

They do not want to be the solution of last resort related to homeless
persons on the street.

I was shocked and disappointed when I heard the Lt. was removed from the
mediation process. Another opportunity lost for positive change.

The mediation process, if it is allowed to move forward, brings hope to many
different communities that have been marginalized and hurt over the
years...with persons experiencing homelessness certainly being among them.
