Thanks to the Star Tribune for bringing this story to light and to Shawn Lewis for sharing the issue of workforce diversity with the list. Shawn also asked where candidates for city office stand.

I think that the city can do a much better job of tracking and communicating about this in three areas including: its own workforce, the workforce and ownership of the companies and organizations it contracts with, and those groups and individuals who receive city/public grants, loans or other subsidies (including NRP, CDBG and Empowerment Zone).

I am sure that there are a lot of figures available and that there are a lot we do not have. We need to do a much better job of collecting and communicating about this information.  This is something that the Civil Rights Department ought to be taking a proactive, leadership role in by helping collect, compile, track and communicate about it.

I would like to see the city, NRP and other jusisdictions --- in cooperation with community members and organizations --- complete audits of their own, then offer them to the public (and press) for scrutiny.  Such an effort would lay the groundwork for the development of measurable goals for diversifying our workforce and combating discrimination in hiring and contracting practices, as well as in the awarding of grants and other subsidies.

More and  more issues of this type will come to the surface because
racial minorities want a piece of the pie. In order for economic prosperity
to continue within the Twin Cities Metro Area, racial minorities MUST have
opportunities to good paying jobs! However, public institutions like city government
seems to practice discrimination, which is wrong and illegal.
The Minneapolis police department MUST also stop its discrimination as well.

Dear candidates for public office-where do you stand???
