I feel that most folks who responded directly to my
inquiry about their perceptions of the extent of
discrimination on the basis of "color" in Minneapolis
and what can be done about it are confriming that
there is confusion over what constitutes
discrimination on the basis of color as opposed to
race, so I guess it's good the issue has been raised
and were discussing it.

My understanding of discrimination on the basis of
color is that it is discrimination on the basis of
skin color or, to use another term, shade.
Discrimination on this basis can and does occur among
people of african descent just as it has and does
among people of european descent or asian descent. It
can, in fact often does, occur in contexts involving
individuals of the same race.

Historically in this country there have been
organizations that literally used color pallets to
determine membership and your skin had to be lighter
than a certain shade for you to be admitted. Their
have been those who have expressed disdain or refused
to mix socially or hire or otherwise afford
opportunity to people of darker shade than their own
or their families although they are of the same race
or heritage.

It is quite telling to me that most all the responders
to my inquiry communicated an understanding that
conflated the term "race" with "color".

Discrimination against people on the basis of whether
they are lighter or darker skinned is a very real
problem but again my question is to what extent does
it remain a problem in Minneapolis and what can be
done about it? How much discirmination on the basis
of color is their in Minneapolis? Where does it occur
and to whom and in what contexts?
