NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dave Shegstad, Ward 9 City Council Candidate Launches Write-in Campaign Minneapolis - October 11th, 2005 - Dave Shegstad, the independent candidate for the Ward 9 City Council seat in South Minneapolis has decided to press on with his election campaign despite not being on the ballot this year. "When people go to the polls on election day, they don't have a real choice," Shegstad says, "both of the candidates on the ballot now represent business as usual. I'm running a write-in campaign to give my ward an alternative." Shegstad narrowly lost a spot on the ballot in the primary election. The margin was just over one hundred votes, and Shegstad is confident that he'll find more support in the general election on November 8th, when turnout will be higher. "I know this is the hard road," Shegstad says, "but when I commit to doing something, I don't just give up when it gets hard. I work harder. Sometimes you have to do things the hardest way to get it done. I'm not afraid to do that." Shegstad ran his primary campaign on issues like eliminating instead of containing crime, protecting citizens from rampant property seizure under the city's eminent domain power and openness and inclusiveness in city government, promising, "I'll listen to you because we are all part of this community." The issues Shegstad stands for haven't changed, but the nature of the campaign has somewhat. "It's not at all difficult," says Shegstad of casting a write-in ballot, "you just fill in the circle by the blank line, and write my name on the ballot." Shegstad continues to campaign for a more responsible, open government that preserves the rights of the people it represents.
