Speak Out to Improve Police Community Relations
Implement the Federal Mediation Agreement
Where:
Mpls City Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, City Hall, 350
South 5th Street
(City Council Public Safety & Regulatory Services
Committee meeting)
When: Wednesday, October 12, 1:30 p.m.
The City Council already voted unanimously to support
this agreement.
Hold the City Accountable for these promises:
Diversify the Minneapolis Police Department, MPD
The MPD will exercise its best efforts to meet its
own stated goals for recruitment, hiring, and
promotion for protected classes, to include people of
color, African Americans, American Indians, women, and
people of disability.
As part of the official recruitment strategy, the
Minneapolis Police Department and the PCRC will
establish partnerships with community based
organizations. And, the MPD will consult with the
Police-Community Relations Council (PCRC) to
identify potential barriers to effective recruitment;
to identify community based organizations willing to
enter into a partnership with the MPD to assist in
recruiting from within the members of these
communities.
· Foster Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity.
To recognize and to acknowledge the diversity within
the community and within the MPD, the MPD will work
with the Police Community Relations Council and other
community leaders, and will recruit community contacts
and experts for consultation.
Because language differences can be a barrier to
effective communication, is one indication of cultural
affiliation, the MPD agrees to:
use officers and
contract with community members of different cultures
or ethnic backgrounds to assist in training
regarding topics involving interacting with people
from other cultures, races,
ethnicities, or sexual orientations.
· End All Racially Biased Policing.
Racially biased policing is the act of making law
enforcement decisions solely on the basis of race.
Often called racial profiling, racially biased
policing is not only wrong, it is illegal. The MPD
agrees to
provide its employees with training:
regarding undoing racism, ethnic stereotypes,
prejudice and white privilege; regarding the
inappropriate conduct that fosters perceptions of
biased policing; regarding human rights.
