See the article at: http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/5670400.html I attended the demonstration of the new shotspotter system on Friday. It is really cool. As a person who has attempted to direct police services to the scene of gunfire I can tell you it's difficult sometimes to pinpoint exactly where the gunfire is coming from. This new system can pinpoint the exact address of the gunfire and place it on the 911 dispatch screens within seconds. That will lessen response time for the police and enable them to go right to the spot it happened. That is a HUGE benefit to neighborhoods that experience repeated gunfire. The cost of this system seems reasonable enough that the council should be able to appropriate the funding for it in 2006. A big thanks to Council Vice President Robert Lilligren and CM Gary Schiff for taking an active interest in this system. Both CM's see the benefit for the neighborhoods they represent.
