It was reported today on this forum by a door knocking campaign worker
that a householder had said, in reply to a remark about Mr. Schiff, "I
would NEVER vote against a gay person." I only remark it, without
attribution, because I've heard it before in other places.
My question, as a long time member of the GLBT community, is "Why not?"
Some ten years ago or more, it was estimated by a physician at Methodist
Hospital that the twin cities being "donut cities," probably have a GLBT
population of around 20%. (A donut city is a large city which draws
population from small towns and rural areas within a radius of 150
miles.) If that is true, there are some 76,000 GLBT people in
Minneapolis. (I think that figure may be high.)
Among this large bunch of people there are a proportional number of
dunces, layabouts, and hopeless bean brains as there are in any other
population. There are also a proportional number of thieves, rapists,
murderers, total scary nut jobs, panderers, gutless wonders, residents
of the home for the bewildered, etc.
In fact, there have been some really crass, awful GWMs in the history of
this country. J. Edgar Hoover and Roy Cohn come immediately to mind.
There have been some dreadful LBT folks as well, but none with so public
a history that I can think of at the moment.
At this point in history in Minneapolis, privileged gay white males are
over represented on the city council, IMO, as are straight white
privileged males, and straight white privileged females, the dominant
theme being white and privileged.
I cast no aspersions on the current city council members of the GLBT
persuasion in this regard. Still, if a boatload of working class
lesbians were to show up asking for my vote, I'd still take the time to
find out if they were worth voting for. Course, I might have to go for
coffees or beers two or three times with each of them before I could
make a decision. Particularly if they were interesting.
