I was disappointed to see the Star Tribune's choices for Library Board this
morning. Not unlike President Bush and the Supreme Court, through their
endorsements the Star Tribune and the DFL are determined to have fewer women
sit on the Library Board. This is especially disconcerting when you consider
the majority of avid readers and library workers are women.
Therefore I propose an alternative, truly reform based slate:
Laura Waterman Wittstock - best member of the board, sharp candidate,
pragmatic, intelligent
Anita Duckor - an incumbent worthy of another four years, excellent
fundraiser and a true independent voice
Samantha Smart - proven fundraiser with deep grassroots, my personal
favorite candidate of reform, she will listen to all parties, including our
staff
Alan Hooker - ambitious young politician, only candidate from the
northside, very well informed and thoughtful, although the Star Tribune
would like you to think otherwise, has never been a librarian and that's a
good thing
Eric Hinsdale - Working librarian with many fresh ideas about technology
and service, does have governing board experience, worked with MELSA, the
board would be well served with a librarian on it and he is the best of the
three running
Gary Thaden - his charter experience will be important to the board and he
is a genuine, approachable candidate
Hopefully our new council and mayor will appoint women to the board as well
and if no librarian is elected, hopefully a working librarian will be
appointed by one or the other.
