Great point Justin!
As for actual work, I can tell you that Peter McLaughlin is not the same as
RT Rybak. Peter not only talks, he is willing to carry the environmental
load with his fellow Minneapolis residents. Peter McLaughlin helped found
the Phillips Community Energy Coop, and then was at every meeting working to
make it happen. Was working between those meeting to also make it happen.
Peter McLaughlin was not sitting in front of a camera, or doing the ribbon
cutting, he was there month in and month out doing the hard work and
carrying the load with his fellow citizens. Peter was doing that work even
when he was not running for office.
The answers to your questions might be yes from both candidates. But those
yes's are only words. If you want to know who means what they say then look
at actual work. Peter McLaughlin has been willing to PERSONALLY carry the
load and do the work. Leadership by example, not just ribbon cutting and
hot air for a television camera. Peter McLaughlin believes in environmental
issues by praxis and physical service! RT, I am afraid does also, but by
theory and lip service. RT probably would be in favor of praxis also - at
least in theory!
Of course "in theory" Mr. Rybak seems to be for anything you want, if you
will only support his being elected.

Standing on the right side of an issue that is
politically beneficial just makes sense.
All this is largely in the past, so instead of letting mayoral candidates
latch on to what citizens are already doing and calling it their own, we
need to ask what types of new thinking do they have for the City's energy
future.
Question: Do the mayoral candidates support a target of 50% renewable
energy for municipal operations, and city-wide goal of 10% above any state
or federal mandates by 2014? (Proposed by Citizens Environmental Advisory
Committee, Sept 2005).
Question: Do the mayoral candidates support investment in hybrid fleet
vehicles for routine city operations such as inspections?
Question: What should the City do to attract green industry and become a
leader in renewable energy use and/or production?
The City needs leadership on these topics now more than ever before. The
citizens are running out of time to get answers before the election, but
we can't get answers if we don't ask the questions.
