Is this true? First of all, the letter itself is an astonishing criticism of the Rybak administration. Second, it comes from 3 credible sources: co-chair of the PCRC, head of the police federation, and PCRC member Mark Anderson (I think he was Wellstone's policy advisor on mental health issues). Third, they are claiming the Star Tribune refused to publish this information as op/ed. They have neglected to report responsibly on this issue. I think newspapers should be in the business of reporting the news, not reframing reality to support their own political agenda. The mayor's office is failing us on public safety. Is that okay with people? What goes through your head when you hear Police Community Relations have broken down and crime is up? Not in my neighborhood? I live a low-risk lifestyle so it doesn't concern me? Crime -> failing education -> failing neighborhoods -> declining property values -> tax base erosion -> more crime -> -> Less crime -> better schools -> stronger neighborhoods -> sustaining property values -> vibrant commercial/industrial/retail tax base -> more jobs -> more public transportation options -> -> I know somebody is going to jump all over me an say this is oversimplified, and it is. But it doesn't change the fact that these things are interdependent. I want to live in a city where the mayor's office works together to support the police. I want the police to have staff and resources to do their jobs. Nikki Carlson Linden Hills REMINDERS: 1. Be civil! Please read the NEW RULES at http://www.e-democracy.org/rules.
