Clearly Mr. Marshall has never worked at a newspaper or news organization or he
would not write, "But when they think that one candidate is
better than another, for whatever reason, they have every right to slant the
news whichever way they want. . ."

I write this as a graduate as Columbia University's Pulitzerr Graduate School
of Journalism and former Producer at Channel 2 , when it was KTCA.

In most modern news organizations, the editorial and news functions are kept
strictly separate, AS THEY SHOULD BE. Just because the editorial page or staff
may support building a stadium on Nicolett Island for DeLaSalle or R.T. Rybeck,
that does not give the news department permission to slant the news in favor of
a stadium or the current Mayor.

Most news organizattions, except Fox News, pride thjemselves on keeping their
objectivity and independence. That does not mean that occassional bias do not
seep in, but in my experience if a reporter or producer were ever caught
deliberately slanting a story they would probably be immediately treminated, as
they should be.

The only thing that keeps readers and viewers trusting news organizations is
their independence and objectivity. If it were ever known that a news
organization were deliberately slanting the news, every story and reporter
would then be suspect and that organization would immediately lose the trust
and respect of the reading and viewing public, which is hard enough to earn
anyway in this day and age.

I think Mr. Marshall owes an apology to all of the hard working reportes and
editotrs around the country and I suggest that he enroll in a Journalism 101
class immediately.

I am always flabbergasted by those who complain about bias in newspaper
coverage.

What requirement is there that mandates that a newspaper must provide fair
and unbiased coverage of an issue?

Haven't they ever heard of the First Amendment of the Constitution granting
"freedom of the press?" The only reason that newspapers even attempt to be
fair is to sell more papers. But when they think that one candidate is
better than another, for whatever reason, they have every right to slant the
news whichever way they want, subject only to the laws of libel.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you want negative coverage on Rybak,
then start your own paper! But don't waste your time whining about unfair
coverage.

Got a growing beef with the Strib: I have noticed
a decided tendency during this election season on
the part of the Strib staff to avoid covering any
story that may reflect poorly on RT.
