McLaughlin HAS improved Rybak's lack of substantive anti-crime moves. >

Me: This is such an utterly laughable claim!

From: wmmarks There are more lies surrounding the access project than even the Bush II administration can deny. Since I was there when the action around this happened, I can say that the 35W access project came out of the NRP process and was spearheaded by Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Org. PPNO was stellar both in its commitment and follow through. The invitations to the meeting were sent out to Allina and Honeywell at the time, as well as St. Mary's, and a bushel of Lake St., Chicago, Bloomington, and Cedar Ave. businesses, plus all the office holders in the area, except for Park, Library, and E&T boards, though A.Young, MPRB, was there. Those attending included McLaughlin, Dorfman, Wecjman, Berglin, Clark, Herron, Niland, and Thurber, Wetternach represented SSB, I believe.

Me: Oh puhleez! Don't name drop as though these people support the current version of the Access Project! Just because someone said "it sounds like a good idea" before the idea was developed doesn't make them a supporter of what the consultants came up with for their clients, Allina & Wells Fargo (though ALL stakeholders were supposed to have been their clients). It was a Pandora's box. One of SSB's & Wetternach's final efforts while in office was to oppose what the project had grown into (an expansion plan), the memo they wrote has been widely distributed. McLaughlin's support might have evaporated at some point too due to the grotesque version consultants came up with, but he had already made promises to support it to the people who support him. Also, please don't use a collective "we" unless you've won an election and thus the right to speak for the masses you would then represent. I doubt the people you refer to would appreciate you speaking for them without their permission.

I've watched him in a variety of situations, but have never observed any bullying behavior.

Me: Take a look at his literature, and his composure during the tv interviews, etc. Very clearly bullying behavior. Denying it doesn't change the facts.

From: wmmarks>
The old white guys at Urban Ventures, as you put it, consist of two men, Art Erickson and Ralph Bruins. They may just be old white guys, but they did convince Colin Powell to support their sports program and building plans. UV is also backed by a board of directors which includes former Gov. Quie, among other heavyweights.

Me: Like I said, old white guys. OK Colin Powell isn't white, but he's a Republican & saw a chance to engender Republican ideals in urban minorities who traditionally support Democrats. Yeah, the Republican ideals worked for him, but old white guys trying to stuff this into the children in our neighborhoods is not good use of taxpayer dollars and McLaughlin should be ashamed to have supported it. Perhaps this is the source of accusations that McLaughlin is a "closet Republican".

Now look at the list of political contributions (available through City Pages website); Peter McLaughlin has stron big business & old guard "good-ole-boy" support, including Smith Parker!! This is not the agenda that will be good for Minneapolis. Constituent and business interests need to be balanced.

So, yes, if McLaughlin is elected, there will
be more work pushing for a 35W access project. However, due to the cost of fossil fuels, my guess is that the project will be redesigned. >

Me: Was it not evident a couple of years ago that fossil fuels are a finite resource? Any plan that didn't consider this obvious reality isn't worth a dime of taxpayer money. The really sad part is that Smith Parker took about $5 million in tax payer money, how INSANE is that!!

I think there must be someone running around wearing a McLaughlin mask and pretending to be a county commissioner. >

Me: Agreed! And we really don't need to give the guy a chance to pretend to be mayor.

As I recall, during the last election for county commissioner, Peter McLaughlin's now ex-wife put up a lawn sign supporting his opponent. Their relationship issues aren't fair game, but her lack of support for him is, because after all those years together I'd guess she knows him better than anyone.

If it's not fair game, why do you bring it up? That you did so says that you think it fair game. Sheesh!

Me: Um, hello! If you read what I wrote, I wasn't going to get into their relationship issues and I didn't (yes there is plenty to discuss and none of it is fair game on this forum). I said that what is important about the situation is the person who knows him best (his ex wife) doesn't support him for office. That says a lot, PLENTY of other spouse and ex-spouse of politicians have stood by their partner through marital difficulty separations - like the governor of NJ, Hillary Clinton, and so many more. That McLaughlin's wife won't support him is important.

OK, so now today the voters have spoken, and resoundingly refuted Mr or Ms Marks' choice of Peter McLaughlin, making it a great day for Minneapolis.

I continue to lament the fact that what I consider racist politics gerrymandered Samuels & Johnson-Lee into the same ward. That is a loss for the city.

I am happy to see that Marie Hauser's misinformation caught up with her, and that she was defeated. The stunt using Jeff Hayden's aunt was (in my mind) very clearly designed to imply (without permission) that Ms Hauser had the support of leaders in the African American community. The stunt assured that she did NOT get said support, and she's been duly punished for her deceit. Congratulations to Elizabeth Glidden, who from what I can tell operated a very ethical and clean campaign, and who holds a lot of promise as someone who will treat all constituents fairly.

Best
