We have had anti discrimination laws on the books in Minneapolis since the
1960's so how come Target pharmacists are allowed to refuse to fill
contraceptive prescriptions. It has long been established law in Minneapolis
that if you rent property, you don't refuse to rent to certain races, genders,
religions, etc and if you do, there will be legal sanctions -- fines to start
with but up to and including jail. If you work in Minneapolis, you don't
refuse to serve various races, etc and if you insist on discriminating, you
don't work or do business in Minneapolis. And if you try it, there will be
fines and jail.
We wouldn't permit someone who belonged to the Aryan Identity Church to do
business in Minneapolis while refusing to serve or hire Blacks without fining
them or jailing them. So why should we permit someone to enforce their
personal Christian morality on the public they deal with?
Some of our anti discrimination laws not only require that a company that
does business in Minneapolis not only not discriminate in Minneapolis but that
they not discriminate anywhere else either.
So why aren't we enforcing the civil rights ordinances we all ready have and
telling Target and any pharmacists who are inclined to impose their personal
morality on their customers what's what. And if we need to pass any amendments
to our civil rights ordinances, let the City Council and Mayor do so forthwith.
And we as citizens of Minneapolis should DEMAND that they do so. Let's tell
Target and any of its pharmacists who are inclined to play morality enforcer to
SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT!
