If it's a sord of mallards, a gaggle of geese, and an exaltation of
larks, is it a pride of politicians or a congress of politicians?
Whatever, there were a few clustered on the corner of Lake St. and
Chicago Av. when the first--and freshly washed--city bus pulled into the
bus stop from the east and Congressman Sabo stepped onto the new curbing.
Greeted by the Timberwolves mascot and some Timberwolf cheerleaders,
McGruff the crime dog, and a cluster of others we gathered to hail the
opening of Lake St. to bus traffic at 10 a.m. today. Everyone stepped
across the street for coffee and donuts brought from the Mercado at
Bloomington/Lake, and a chat up with neighbors and politicians alike. I
noticed that the merchants looked mostly relieved. Businesses have taken
a cut, a big cut, in revenues through the months since April, and the
smaller and newer the business, the tighter the ligature of lost revenues.
The Chicago Av. bridge is likewise finally reopened, so the famous
corner is back in working order. Yes!
Not that the road guys are finished, mind you. Today they are repainting
the lines on the pavement, putting up the light standards, affixing
benches and trash cans, etc. There is still another layer of macadam to
lay over the whole street. When that will happen I'm not sure. Were I
younger, I would feel called upon to go up and down Lake St. with a sign
saying, "the end is near."
It's a great relief to have the worst of remodeling a street
finished--at least between 5th Av and 14th Av.
