Wow, something I can finally speak about without asking questions first!

Last June my son graduated from the International Baccalaureate (IB) program
at Southwest High School. This fall he is enrolled at a Midwest university.
When I called him one day to see how things were going he said that school
was easy. He could not understand how kids at his college could get C's and
D's on stuff that was so easy. Need I say anymore about the education he
received in high school?

I have daughter who is a Junior at Southwest this year. She is not in the IB
but in the Arts & Humanities (A&H) program. She is taking Advanced Placement
(AP) English. At conferences this fall her English teacher stated that he
had 40 kids in 3 sections of AP English. He did not have time to make the
class as challenging as he would like. I found this to be very
disappointing.

However, let me say that I do know Dr. Smith, the principal at Southwest and
I am always impressed with how he and his staff care for and challenge
students. What I find interesting is that he has had to become a salesman
for the school traveling around to middle and K-8 schools trying to convince
students to apply to the IB or to attend their attendance district school.

That is enough.

Oh! And Liz, or anyone, can you tell me why the MPRB meeting from last week
is not on webcast?

The statement in this story that bothered me was that a teacher was not
going to be assigning a specific type of assignment because evaluating
37+ of them would be too time consuming. Great... so now our kids
aren't going to get the more challenging thought provoking assignments
because there are too many of them in a class. Can't say more because
that type of language will get me kicked off the list.
