can anyone tell me more about "brt"?

Matty Lang posted some links which are admittedly from a group with
an agenda. And agenda I happen to agree with, but a bias all the
same. I might point you to the Federal Transit Administration
pages about BRT but those wouldn't be any less biased. The feds
are really hyping up BRT, which should give anyone aware of the
current administration's policies toward big oil, transit and
freeways great pause.

The truth is, no one can tell you more about "BRT" because no one
really knows what it is. It can mean anything from exclusive
right-of-way corridors with nice stations _a_la_ LRT and preferred
signaling to a glorified express bus running on freeway shoulders.
BRT advoicates have done a good job of muddying the terms and sowing
confusion.

I am extremely suspicious about "BRT" projects in the metro that
claim to cost 1/4 that of LRT. It tells me that they will not
really be BRT, but enhanced express bus service. Not that that's
a bad thing, we need more of it. But to sell it as "BRT" and make
it equivalent to LRT is a lie.

As for PRT, there are several sites out there that cover it.
Steve Nelson does a good job explaining why we should _not_
build it. He calls it equivalent to the automobile, which I
would agree with in all the worst ways. What has our automobile
culture done to our cities? What has this culture of
hyper-individualism and isolation done to our neighborhoods?
Read the literature from Taxi 2000. One of their biggest
marketing points is that you don't have to ride with "those"
scary and dangerous bus people.

I'd start with the links Matty posted. The site has links out to
the FTA and other places, so you can explore. The more people
understand this stuff, the better decisions we'll make.
