It was suggested to me that instead of publishing the RRA index number, I substitute the consolidation function name and PDP per CDP count: the rationale being to hide internals of the RRD file whenever possible. This seems reasonable, so I've gone ahead and implemented the suggestion (including changing rrdupdate.pod).
