Naveen, Device availability is a complex subject. Normally it will involve collecting and comparing several parameters on a device and then checking for threshold crossings. Availability is a special case of Performance Management in that respect.
If you have a large network, the next level would be to group devices and consolidate the status from several devices into a single "group availability". And ultimately a "system or service availability" number. As a simple alternative, ping probes are commonly used, however, they give a limited view of device availability. For example, if device responds to a ping probe it means you have IP connectivity from the management station to the device. This may not be a sufficient statement for many of the other services which are crossing the device. Again, if you have a large network, you may need a method for consolidating the information. In other words, to use MRTG for this, you would have to write pre-processing scripts that would perform all of the collection and calculations and then feed the numbers to MRTG. regards Bob > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Behalf Of Naveen Sivenandan > Sent: Thursday, February 13, 2003 6:21 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [mrtg] How to monitor device availability with MRTG > > > Hi,, > > I need to enquire how to setup MRTG to monitor device availability.
