Dear all,

I am a new mrtg user and want to ask about the following questions:

1.) I want to do a self monitoring. If the monitoring machine is up, it will
return 1; otherwise (e.g no network, reboot, power off) it will return 0. I try
to do this by monitoring the operational status of loopback interface (
.iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces.ifTable.ifEntry.ifOperStatus ).
However, it always return 1. Which thing should I monitor so as to fulfil my
purpose?

2.) I use Linux to monitor a few routers' traffic. I found something strange:
e.g If my linux is down for about 30 minutes, and then up again, I found that
the traffic value will have a surge and then back to normal again :

Inside my log file

1045689900 91 47 96 50
1045689600 113 54 122 58
1045689300 39 51997 122 76440 <---a surge in traffic
1045689000 0 24460 0 76440 <-- a surge in traffic
1045688700 0 0 0 0
1045688400 0 0 0 0
1045688100 0 0 0 0
1045687800 0 0 0 0
1045687500 0 0 0 0

which shows incorrect data on the graph. How can I fix this problem ?

Thank you very much!
