Evan, 'Nul:' is a valid device on any win32 platform, and is not only restricted to redirecting output. However there is no directory structure available on this device, and you can never retrieve anything from it.
Some examples: Copy <drive:\path> nul: will create a copy of the files to the null device... You can even do a 'dir nul:', 'type nul:*' or 'md nul:new_directory' Because there is no directory structure available you can not use 'nul:\' or any other path on this drive. 'subst N: nul:' does work as long as you don't use any directories on the drive, and do not use any commands the require data on the drive. What I have read suggests that it is only good for redirecting output via >. Also what I have read pertains to NT and 2000, would XP be different?
