Yes my issue was the environment variables in RH9. Basically, SNMP wasn't
working right. Solution is here:

    Did we ever get a solution for this problem?  I have several Cat 6500's
that have quite a few ports and none of them have descriptions.  So how do
you get Port Name to populate the Port Description.
