It's possible that one or both of the targets are passing so much traffic that
they're rolling the counters over within the polling interval. You should
check your MaxBytes value (in the RRD and the MRTG config) and verify that it's
not being exceeded by adding the two targets together.

I'm not sure how RRDTool knows if you're using a 64- or 32-bit counter (to
determine the rollover), but if you're not polling using SNMPv2, you probably
should be.

Hope that helps,
Corey.

Subject: [mrtg] Target addition problems

Hi, we're using MRTG/RRD to graph our routers and switches, and I'm having a
problem adding two targets together to get our total internet usage. The
two individual targets (Gigabit ethernet ports) both work OK, but as soon as
I try and add them, it all goes haywire. The total for them never gets
above ~70Mb, but one of the ports on its own is passing around 175Mb of
data! The graph generated is very jaggy and spikey, and I can't figure out
what the problem is. Has anyone got any pointers?

Regards

Stephen May
